According to AccountingWeb Dell has had over 30,000 to date who chose pre-installed Linux over Windows XP or Windows Vista. I have to admit that this number is kind of surprising to me.

While Linux has come a long way in the last few years, it still falls short in the user friendly category. We have tested the newest versions Suse Linux, Fedora and yes, even the beloved Ubuntu and they are all still a little too technical for the everyday computer user. Ubuntu was the most polished of the three versions, but little things like installing packages and drivers are still too difficult. Plus, finding a local computer company to support Linux is still a challenge.

My feeling on Linux becoming mainstream is this, when Linux gets to the point where I can give my Grandmother a computer and she can manage updates and feel secure without having to pick up the phone to call me, then it will be ready for the mainstream. Until then, I will have to keep recommending Windows and OS X.
